Women of Pankisi
Video duration: 06:11
Our project aims to highlight the cultural and socio-economic conditions of women living in the Pankisi Gorge, the challenges they face, and examples of success. We believe that visual storytelling through photography will be easier to grasp and more memorable than a written narrative.
The perception of the Kist world, their culture, and their values are based on three fundamental concepts: the relationship between a person and God; the relationship between a person and the community; the relationship between a person and the family.
These are the three key pillars that define and shape the role, function, and purpose of both Kist men and women in this world. Therefore, when discussing the status of Kist women, it is essential to consider that their religion, culture, and societal values play a significant role in their lives. For a Kist woman, it is crucial to be respected, valued, and to have the right to make choices. In line with the recognition of her self-identity, she should have access to opportunities such as education, employment, personal development, and protection from violence.
The works were created within the framework of the project “Creative arts for shifting power for equality in marginalized communities of Georgia”. The project is funded by the Swedish Institute and implemented by the Tbilisi Photo Festival in partnership with Save the Children International.
The Swedish Institute did not participate in the design of the project.
