In this remote village called Digo in Azerbaijan’s Astara region, there are 50 children, only one car and no school. It rains most of the year, and is covered in snow in winter. Sometimes parents pay the only driver in the village to go to school on mountain roads. Ten-year-old Shindan’s school is his house and his teacher is his father. His father teaches him to write what he knows: the names of objects from their yard. Many parents are not able to teach their children. To make a living, many try to smuggle drugs illegally from Iran to Azerbaijan and get arrested.
