Alone like Pale

Guram Tsibakhashvili’s photo series “Alone like Pale” was shot in 1997 during a trip to Frankfurt. The inspiration for the series came from a short story by the Danish writer Jens Sigsogord, telling the tale of Pale, a boy who wakes up one day to find himself alone and terrified in a deserted city. “I remembered this story,” says Guram Tsibakhashvili, “when over 20 years ago in Frankfurt I went out for a walk and I did not see a single person. The city was completely empty and I felt a strange dread. I started shooting. Today, the reality of global quarantine – locked down cities, lifeless boulevards – took me back to the series I shot in Frankfurt, which eerily foreshadows our present reality.”
